Territory of Mariupol was inhabited since ancient times. In 1830, during the construction of the "Azovstal" factory, on the left bank of the Kalmius river ancient burial was found, the age of burial dates back to the late Neolithic period (5-6 thousand years B.C.). In the XVI century Cossack fortress Domaha was on the site of Mariupol, in 1778 the city of Pavlovsk was founded, which in 1779 was renamed to Mariupol. The name of Mariupol can be translated from the Greek language as "City of Maria", this name wa given to Mariupol by Catherine II in honor of the wife of the heir to the throne of Russian empire Pavel I - Maria. Modern Mariupol is one of the biggest industrial and cultural center of Ukraine. The main industries are ferrous metallurgy and mechanical engineering, the largest enterprises of the city: JSC "Illich Steel and Iron Works" and JSC "Azovstal". The largest sea trading port of the Sea of Azov located in Mariupol.
